Myopia from Greek, also called near- or short-sightedness, is a refractive defect of the eye in which collimated light produces image focus in front of the retina when accommodation is relaxed.(Larkin GL, 2006).
Myopia is a common disease in Taiwan, because Taiwan is a developing country. TVs, computers, and many electronic instruments are rampant in every home. Consequently, the ratio of myopia in children increased rapidly. Methods to improve our eyesight or prevent from myopia are essential to modern people.
First, balanced diet is important. For instance, beta-carotene is an element which is essential for eyes and rich in carrot. Salad which contains carrot is good to patients who suffered from nearsightedness.
Second, appropriate usage of eyes is necessary. Parents should limit their children’s time of using TVs, computers.
Third, visiting doctors in a period of time is necessary. Sometimes, we used our eyes in a long period of time; our eyes will be tired and have a syndrome of pseudo-myopia. If we go to see the doctor in time, our syndrome of pseudo-myopia will disappear soon.
Another syndrome of eyes is glaucoma. It is a disease that the pressure of eyes increased rapidly and steadily. If we did not see the doctor in time, we probably may lose our eyesight.
Consequently, if we want to have a pair of good eyes, we should follow the rules strictly. Most important of all, degradation of eyesight is irreversible; therefore, balanced diet, appropriate time of using electronic instruments, regularly visited ophthalmologists are indispensable.
